Tuesday 29 March 2016Book Jon S
Jon S, better known as one half of SA’s most popular DJ duo, PIMP Squad, who have released three compilations, and between the pair they have racked up some serious production credits with tracks on various local compilations.
Inspired by early influences such as Carl Cox, Todd Terry and Armand Van Helden, Jon took to the decks and found his calling in house music, which was still an emerging genre at the time, much smaller than the harder forms of dance which made up the lions share of the dance market at the time.
He started his career in the entertainment industry as a DJ at the ‘Squeeze’ and ‘Warehouse’ parties in the late 90’s that were infamous amongst their loyal patrons. Jon played a distinctive mix of deep to funky house with techy edge, which remains his sound to this day. Eventually he started his own event production company ‘All Good Productions’ which hosted their first ever event at the Edenvale Sports Club in December 2000.
The business venture with friends Frank J, Trent and Stevie D proved to be a success and All Good Productions soon became a key part of the deep house explosion in Johannesburg, frequently throwing top quality house events, showcasing both established and up and coming DJ talent. Their events grew bigger and they started hosting regular internationals, including some rather big names such as DJ Vadim (UK), Diesel Boy (US – world’s #1 Drum n Bass DJ), Harrison Crump (US), Kaskade (OM Records), Bruno Banner (Troublemen - FRA), Richie Louisy and Jack Henney (UK), partnering up with various other production companies along the way, such as Inishi8, Two Twiggs and Next Movement.
As the All Good events began to pick up, so did Jon’s DJ career and he soon found himself playing the Joburg house circuit more frequently, hosting residencies and slots at clubs like Reality, Sublime, @115, Tramps and Sutra.
In autumn 2001 Jon and fellow All Good DJ Guy Herman joined forces to form the two-man DJ act, The Pimp Squad, immediately wowing audiences everywhere with their technical wizardry and infectious energy. Over the following years they increased in popularity and graced the decks at just about every club and major event in and around Johannesburg. It wasn’t long before their popularity spread nationwide, and they started touring nationally, and 2006 saw them receive the honour of being selected to tour the country with legendary house internationals Jake Childs (US) then later that year, Jason Hodges (Canada).
The pair released their first compilation, ‘Deeper Sound of Pimp Squad’ in 2005 through USM Records, adding them to the prestigious roster of DJs to release under the label. The follow up album 'Road Trip' in 2007 was their platform for the introduction of some new-skool sounds as well as their seasoned house sound they became renowned for. 2009 saw the Pimps get selected to mix 'Electric Circus vol1' which was launched at the Circus' second birthday.
During the massive success of the albums and their accompanying national tours, Jon decided to focus on music production. His first tune got licensed by David Gresham Record Company for their ‘05 summer compilation release, ‘Lady Lea – Catch me if you can’. He has since released tracks on various compilations and digital releases worldwide.
Not only is Jon a top-class producer, event promoter, DJ and all-round entertainment entrepreneur, but he is a skilled graphic/web designer & 3D animator, not to mention having studied IT before going into the music industry full time. He now heads up the Soul Candi Design Studio at the Soul Candi Headquarters in Johannesburg. He is responsible for their CD/DVD sleeve design and also covers all the marketing and web design for the music group as well as an open doors design studio. Jon has designed for the likes of All Good, Sushi Sunday, Electric Circus, Truth, Nicci Beach, Looney Tunez, Next Movement, Groove Bar, Truth, Sutra, Soul Candi Sound System and many more...
Whether it’s the deep, dirty beats or solid, techy grooves of his sound, Jon’s music and performance embody a carefree and positive presence. “It’s all good,” he says. “There is a lot in life to celebrate, and I’ll try to provide the soundtrack. Free thinking... my part is this."
